Best Before takes a critical view on our crude oil resources, global consumption increase, controversially discussed extraction techniques and environmentally disastrous oil spills.
Explored as a science fiction narrative, Best Before imagines a dystopian future in which oil deposits are nearly exhausted, turning into a rare natural resource. In this reality, last recovered oil amounts are no longer consumed as combustible fuels but used instead as a “new” jewellery material. Telling a story about depletion, the work was created in line with this thought:
Designed as unique, one-off wearing experiences, the jewellery is made of solidified oil parts that slowly melt through body temperature when pieces being worn. Clinging on precious metal skeletons that act as core holding structures, my material choice juxtaposes crude oil with silver and gold, which are widely perceived and valued for their inherent and monetary value. Entwined together, they problematize the ecological consequences of mining and industrial extraction beneath the guise of status symbolism.
Best Before’s visual language was inspired by traditional jewellery elements and shapes produced by the various petroleum industries.
